Spells
Spells are a focused representation of magic: wielders channel raw mana and shape it into Spells. The act of using a Spell is called Casting, and the model casting it is the Caster. Unless stated otherwise, a model uses its INT (Intellect) when casting, and must have the matching Affinity (Element) to cast Spells of a given Element. A model can cast only one Spell at a time, and cannot cast Spells with “both hands full”.
The five types of Spells
- Sorcery
- Offensive Spells, generally used as an Attack.
- Healing
- Spells that restore HP or remove negative States, used as an Assist.
- Enchantment
- Spells that bolster or weaken a target for an extended time (until the caster's next Strategic Phase unless stated otherwise); cast only in the Active Role and not prevented by a Dodge. A model can hold only one Enchantment of the same name. If the Power is the ✯ symbol, the enchanted model's Attacks gain the “Spell” type.
- Conjuration
- Spells that summon a creature to the field (see Summoner and Conjuration).
- Transmutation
- Permanent Spells that affect the environment and remain until removed or destroyed; if they have an Armor value they can be Attacked and destroyed.
Delivery: Ranged and Melee
Besides the type above, every Spell also has a delivery type printed on its card: Ranged, Melee, or both (Ranged/Melee). A Spell cast as a Ranged Attack uses the ranged rules and can be blocked by Cover; a Spell cast as a Melee Attack uses the melee rules, so Melee effects work in it — for instance Sweep applies to a Melee Spell just as it does to a normal Melee weapon attack. If a Spell is Ranged/Melee, the attacker picks which delivery to use when declaring the Attack.
